Porcelain from Limoges was sold as blanks, or undecorated pieces. Painting the blanks was a beloved hobby amongst upper class ladies in the late 1800's and early 1900's. By the turn of the 20th century, more than 25,000 artists, mostly women, also painted Limoges blanks in a cottage industry. Unknown, they are responsible for the hand.

The Red overglaze decorating mark is I think, Bawo & Dotter mark 9. 1900 to 1914 The green mark 5 is also Bawo & Dotter underglaze factory mark after 1900. Antique Limoges France Elite Works BRIDAL WREATH Tea Cup & Saucer, St
In the early 1870s they established The Elite Works in Limoges to decorate porcelain made by other factories. Their production included table china, decorative pieces and trinket boxes. Some of their marks incorporated St. Martial from the seal of the City of Limoges. Porcelain production was interrupted during WWI.

The piece was produced by factories controlled by families or ordinary artisans. Names like Elite France, M. Redon, A. Lanternier and C. Ahrenfedlt are that of families involved in the production of Limoges China. Elite works, in particular, marked its pieces in the colors red between 1900 to 1914 and switched to the color green from 1920 to 1932.

The New York firm of Bawo and Dotter (who owned and operated the Elite Limoges works in France) changed the style of the mark several times over the years. They began to produce china in the early 1860s, and continued into the 1920s.

Just as the call for limoges enamel pieces dwindled, kaolin, an essential clay in the making of porcelain, was found just 18 miles southwest of Limoges at St. Yreix. With that, a new era began for the town. Limoges built its first porcelain factory a mere six years after the initial find of the kaolin.
